| Q: What is the cost this year?
A: It will be $35 IF YOU SIGNUP BY
April 18th! If you signup after April 18th the cost will
go to $40. If you signup after May 21st the
cost will go to $45. Players will not be allowed
to signup after JULY 4TH, 2008 ( without special circumstances ).
Q: What does your $35 cover?
A: Two games per night (except the first and last night), fields,
insurance, UPA sanctioning, a disc, a t-shirt, and administration
costs such as this website, cones, scoreboards, and any other
materials we may need. Any money leftover will supply the party
food during the finals game!
Water Works Park requires us to pay for field space. In exchange,
they will be mowing the fields every week. However, part of the
deal in contracting through Water Works is that we need to have
liability insurance. We found a relatively cheap way to cover
that was to make our league a (Ultimate Players Association) UPA
sanctioned league. With the UPA everyone is required to either
be a UPA member, or become a one-time member for this event. In
addition to the liability insurance, everyone will also be covered
by a secondary accidental medical insurance. (By "secondary",
any other medical coverage you have will be applied first.)
This insurance will only cover accidents that happen during Summer
League, and nothing else (i.e. pickup is not included).
Q: When and what time is Summer League?
A: May 21st - August 20th, 2008.
Each Wednesday night, we will play two games each evening. The
first starting at 6:15pm the second starting at
7:15pm. Please try to show up at least 15 to 20 minutes early.
This will do two things, One - keeps you from speeding
in the park ( PLEASE Obey the 20
mph Speed Limit! ), and Two - makes sure that the first
game gets started on time.
Q: Will this be a Co-ed league this year?
A: The answer that we would like to give would be yes, but
the fact is we just do not get enough females coming out to play
to make it a true co-ed league. We will try to make all the teams
have the same number of females. During summer league we will ask
all teams to try and play gender across. With saying that, we will
not ask any team to play 6 on 7 (or any other ratio) due to lack of
females.
Q: How many teams will there be and what are the size of
the teams?
A: Last year we went to 12 teams of approximately 16 players.
This year we will stay with the 12 team format. If we start
to get more than 200 people signing up, we will consider increasing
the team numbers. This doesn't mean what we can stop recruiting!
Bring out your friends or your friends, friends to pickup.
When new players arrive introduce yourself. Make sure you
know everybody's name on your pickup team. Advertise at work
and at school.
Q: Why can we only sign up to with one additional person?
I really liked my team from last year, and I'd like to play with
all of them again.
A: The goal of the league is to try and get as many people interested
in Ultimate as possible, and to make the league a place where
the newer players can learn from the older players. Therefore
we build the teams with two goals in mind: (1) Try to make the
teams as even as possible, and (2) Try to make sure the experienced
players are well distributed. Also, by keeping the teams equal,
this will hopefully keep all the games competitive.
Q: I would like to be a Captain of a team, How do I do this?
A: When you sign-up for summer league there will be a check box
just for this request. Does this mean that I will automatically
become a captain if I check this box? I am afraid not. We will
take every request seriously, but not everyone can be a captain,
we just don't have enough spots. PLEASE remember that there are
a lot of responsibilities that come with being a
captain. If you would like to learn more or have questions, please
email Trent about
this large responsibility.
Q: I can't make it the first night, should I pay ahead of
time?
A: Don't worry about it - just pay the first night that you
show up to Summer League .(although if you could send Trent
an email, he'll make sure to save your stuff for you).
Q: Okay, can I pay you now? I see Trent at
pickup
.
A: No!! I don't want your
money yet! Just bring it the first night - that will make the
record-keeping a lot easier for me.
Q: What happens if I forget to bring the money?
A: You will get your shirt and disc when you produce the
money. Sorry but this is the way it has to be. We do not run
Summer League to make any money. We put it on because we love
the game. Remember, there is about $1300 for shirts, $500
for the fields, $1200 for the discs, etc... that comes out of our
pockets before we collect the money.
Q: Okay, okay
I get the picture. What else should
I bring on the first night?
A: In addition to bring $35
($40 or $45 if you signup late) in cash or check made
out to Trent Troyer,
be sure to bring a signed
waiver form - we need this as part of the UPA sanctioning
mentioned above. Also, if you are under 18,
there is a second
form for your parents/guardians to sign. WE MUST
HAVE THESE FORMS SIGNED BEFORE WE WILL ALLOW YOU TO PLAY IN
SUMMER LEAGUE. Finally, bring your cleats, because
we will be playing one league game on Opening Night!
Q: Where are we playing Summer League?
A: We will play at the same location within Water Works Park.
The fields are located
on the farthest west circle of the park. We are working with
the park to see if they will keep the gate open off Valley Drive
to reduce your drive time.
Q: How fast can I drive in the park?
A: Glad you asked, PLEASE Obey the 20
mph Speed Limit! Do not speed through the park! This is
your warning. Our relationship with Water Works Park staff
is very important. Be advised that Trent has advised staff
to enforce the speed limit which may directly affect your
ability to drive in the park. If you cannot drive the speed
limit, please find an alternative form of transportation.
Bike, carpooling, etc….
Q: How will we know if the League is cancelled due to the
weather?
A: First of all, we will play in the rain - a little water never
hurt anyone. Lightning, however, CAN hurt, and it has happened
on Ultimate fields (please see http://www.nakedpretzel.com/theman.shtml
for more details). Therefore if there is lightning, we will clear
the fields and try to wait out the storm. There is a committee
of three people who will make the call, and their
decision will stand. We will be going by the
Lightning policy from
the UPA.org.
If the weather is bad durning the day, we will be calling the games by 5pm. Please
watch your email, the website, or a text message ( if you signup for one ) around 5 pm.
